Problem Solving – Solution Generation

How do we generate the ideal solution? An ideal solution comprises many steps in problem solving process and you have to look for the best solution at every stage.

Solution generation is a process that starts with a list of requirements set by the client regarding their need and specification. Based on the set requirements, concept generation helps to pinpoint a variety of possible solutions and ideas that answer those needs.

  • Identifying customer needs
  • Defining the problem and objectives
  • Concept generation
  • Drafting analysis
  • Detail design drawings
  • Execution package.

The most important step is to formalise the customer needs through a documented ‘user requirements specification’ or a ‘statement of requirements’. Establishing and agreeing on this documentation will form the measure of success, achieving the requirements will ensure the stakeholder’s expectations are satisfied.

More times than not there is an existing solution to a problem, I recommend two actions

  1. Research how this problem has been solved in similar circumstances:

While there may be an existing solution to the problem, it may need customisation and this is the reason the client has engaged your services.

  1. Ask the client if they have tried to solve this problem previously and what were the results:

It is important to verify ground covered and to ensure history does not repeat itself.

I also recommend conducting a concept design review with the stakeholders through a flow diagram or 3D model to improve engagement and ensure the solution is in line with expectation. As we, all know the cost of change increases in the later stage of detailed design.

Once the best solution is chosen, it’s time to develop a plan of action. Start by identifying resources and actions that will allow you to implement the chosen solution. Next, communicate the plan and make sure that everyone involved understands and accepts it.
